Joey Healy is quite simply the best brow stylist in NY and possibly the universe! Okay, so That Girl At The Party is biased because he did such a bang up job on my brows and I use his products every day. But he truly loves what he does and has turned brow styling into a fashionable art form. So we were delighted to have Joey contribute to this column with a piece on the runway brow trends from New York, London, and Paris Fashion Weeks.
” It is no mystery that bold brows are here to stay, as every fashion week reassures this fact. With this ongoing trend, however, brows are no longer looked at as just a component of beauty but rather a piece of fashion in itself. As Fashion Week showcases amazing silhouettes from our favorite designers, hair and makeup play a key role in creating the overall looks, with brows taking center stage. From Paris to New York, we noticed two distinct trends concerning brows that ultimately worked to create flawless looks on the runway.
Sleek and Modern
While models rocked sleek, tight hair that was cropped close to the head, their makeup followed suit with a minimal face and defined, present brow. With arches that appear well-groomed and carefully manicured, these models’ brows really worked to frame the eyes and finish off the subtle yet stunning look. At Calvin Klein and Chloe, we saw sleek hairstyles with a deep side part while at Viktor & Rolf and Elie Saab we saw hair slick behind the ears, drawing all attention to the face and requiring little to no makeup. As many designers opted to go bare in terms of makeup, these four looks exemplify what a finished brow can do to elevate a quiet look. This is truly high fashion. By paying specific attention to symmetry and precision, brows are tidy with a generous amount of color infused into each shape. If you are opting to try a classic, sleek hairstyle at-home, I would certainly consider playing up your brows to ensure they are groomed to pinpoint perfection. Carefree and Fresh
As a counterpoint to the clean eyebrow and hairstyle combination, we see also saw a shabby chic look with disheveled hair, and a brow that matched its buoyant finishing. While models embraced coquette styles on the runway, the arches that complemented these looks appeared unfilled and untouched, but in an innocent way. These girls looked fresh and healthy, and embodied the romantic and carefree nature of the clothes they were wearing. As we saw with Cara Delevinge’s messy braid at Giles as well as the wet waves at Phillip Lim and Balmain, the overall appearance was fresh out of bed and very seductive— even Prada displayed a tousled version of this look that had a spontaneous way of being underdone— but it was from that. As beauty industry professionals strategically designed these assumingly messy looks with care, everything was so carefully looked at and beyond intentional. Asymmetry and flaws were celebrated on runways around the world as brows were strikingly stripped of color and combed straight up. Going along with the brow, the models’ nude makeup appeared underworked and was very consistent with their overall demeanor. To get this look, use a non-crunchy, clear brow gel (like The Joey Healy Brow Structure Clear Set, $25, www.joeyhealy.com) and sweep upward to make brows standout and open up the eye. Keep in mind that unlike the first classic look that can be enhanced with cosmetics, this all-natural brow style really depends on what features you already have. Although the overall brow style appeared subtle yet standout, we cannot go without mentioning the outlandish trend we saw with near black, jumbo brows. From New York to Paris, these graphic arches existed without taking into consideration complexion, hair color or brow bone placement— these brows were their own animals. Completely hyperbolizing the bold brow, young innocent models were transformed into fierce fashionistas as seen at Jean Paul Gaultier, Celine and Louis Vuitton. With these rebellious runway arches, we saw the grunge look making a strong comeback. Not for the faint of heart, jumbo brows can be interpreted in a way that is a little more accessible by using a brow powder (like The Joey Healy Luxe Brow Powder, $28, www.joeyhealy.com) and dual-ended brow brush (like The Joey Healy Duo Brow Brush, $28, www.joeyhealy.com) to apply color one shade darker, acknowledging every hair for the full-impact.
With both the brow and the hair mimicking one another, each of these looks worked to enhance the designer collections. As overworked cosmetics can take away from a look, the right makeup and perfect brow combination as shown above did not compete with styles of the runway but rather complemented them to make the overall look even better.
