Friday night saw TGATP up all night chillin’ with my old friends George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic! I first met the band (more aptly described as a traveling circus as there are a gazillion members!) when they did a five night engagement at the old NY hot spot, Tramps. I was the Hostess with the Mostest, in charge of seating the guests and taking care of the bands. I’ve probably seen them at least 30 times over the years, and every time is like the first. The band members, and the tribe that they have built around them, are some of the best, grittiest, funkiest, rawest, craziest, and funniest people I know. It’s always, like having a spaceship full of mad family members, come to visit from Outer Space.
Hearing them play this time was slightly different as it was first time seeing them completely sober. But they were just as transcendental! George is definitely not of this world and his music has crossed every genre unifying concertgoers of every age and ilk for five decades. If you’ve never been to a P-funk show, you have never been to a show! There ain’t no party like the P-funk party ’cause the P-funk party don’t stop! They are not just knee deep, they are totally deep, so get up on your down stroke and make sure you check them out asap!
