The simple sheath dress is the epitome of style for many women. I personally live in them as they are the easiest way to get dressed quickly. It is incredibly flattering and cut to rest just above the knees; it skims your curves, drawing attention to the best bits of your body without being over the top. This classic cut has never really been out of fashion and I live in them as they are simple, yet chic, dressing. Since the 1950s, it has signified class and style. Yet it remains one of the most versatile dresses you can buy. Women such as Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton have made the sheath dress even more appealing in recent years, further adding to this styles ubiquitous appeal.
Designers such as Adrianna Papell (see above) Prada, Ralph Lauren and have created some gorgeous sheath dresses this season.
Here is our guide to how to accessorize your sheaths for maximum impact.
1. The Classic Look
A short strand of pearls will enhance the classic appeal of any sheath dress. Pair it with some glossy ballet flats to create a look that is suitable for any occasion, be it a wedding, a date, lunch with your friends or a day at the office.
2. Make It More Elegant
Switch your short pearl necklace for a longer one which is accented with crystals or diamonds and you can easily transform your sheath dress for an evening event. Just add strappy heels and a clutch bag for a look that is elegant and brimming with style.
3. Prep It Up
For a younger twist on this classic style drape a cardigan around your shoulders or tie a square scarf at your neck. Add a large canvas bag in a complimentary colour to create an outfit that is great for a day out shopping.
4. Double Up
Wearing a white blouse or a polo neck in a contrasting colour under your sheath dress creates an incredibly professional look that transforms the appearance of your frock. Paired with high heels and glasses it’s a fashion statement that will get you noticed for all the right reasons.
5. Cover Up
Wearing a longer style cardigan such as a boyfriend cardigan will give your sheath dress a more casual look. The addition of a skinny belt to hold it all together keeps this more dressed down look just as appropriate for a day in the office or a weekend away.
6. Add Some Bling
Add a little sparkle to your sheath dress when you wear a sparkly pair of earrings or brooch. For even more pizzazz you could add three brooches in a cluster over your heart and really make your dress shine. Reminiscent of a corsage, this method of accessorising looks best when teamed up with a simple pair of shoes such as pumps or slingbacks.
7. Modify your silhouette
Just by adding a variety of different belts you can completely change the shape of your dress and your figure. The same dress can be completely transformed with the addition of either a skinny or a wide belt. Similarly the positioning of your belt can make a big difference too. From low on the hips to high under the bust there are plenty of ways to enhance your silhouette.
